Beyond 4G Germany begins to study 5G communication technology

The Technical University of Dresden (TU-Dresden) established a laboratory earlier in order to explore the 5G wireless communication system beyond LTE-Advanced. The research results of this 5G wireless laboratory are expected to be used in the next stage of wireless communication standard formulation in the world. Although the study will include a variety of system-level concepts, it will still focus specifically on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) technology, while also further expanding the current 8x8 multi-antenna MIMO technology.

Compared with 3.5G and 4G systems, 5G wireless systems are still in a very early stage of research. TU-Dresden has collaborated with Vodafone Chair Mobile CommunicaTIons Systems and is a leader in the field of 3G system research. The organization has been focusing on advanced wireless communication technology research and uses the LabVIEW system design software of National Instruments (NI) New configuration modeling and testing using modular PXI technology.

"NI's RF and communication tools allow us to implement an OFDM prototype system with a single software design flow," said Gerhard Fettweis, director of Vodafone Chair Mobile CommunicaTIons Systems. "After using the modular NI PXI system, we can start from the SISO link and gradually expand to complex MIMO configurations. With a small amount of code modification, we can exceed the 8x8 configuration."

"TU-Dresden is developing the next generation of wireless communication system prototypes," NI CEO James Truchard said. "We are very happy to accelerate the development of future technology, because this will eventually have a profound impact on all mobile phone users."
