Overview
The MAX256 is an integrated primary side controller and H-bridge driver for isolated power circuits. The device includes an on-board oscillator, protection circuitry, and an internal FET driver that provides up to 3W of power to the transformer's main winding. The MAX256 can be operated from an internal programmable oscillator or driven by an external clock to improve EMI performance. Regardless of which clock source is used, the internal triggers ensure that the duty cycle is fixed at 50%, preventing DC current from flowing into the transformer.
The MAX256 operates from a single +5V or +3.3V supply and features undervoltage lockout for a controlled startup process. The device prevents the H-bridge MOSFET from being turned on by a switching mode that is first turned on and off. At high temperatures, the thermal shutdown circuit also provides additional protection against device damage.
The MAX256 is available in an 8-pin, thermally enhanced SO package. The device operates over the automotive temperature range (-40°C to +125°C).
