Oculus's action in the mobile VR field is mainly with Samsung's cooperation on Gear VR. This head supports the Samsung Galaxy and Galaxy Note phones, and most users get it for free when they purchase the Samsung Galaxy series.
At the recent Code Mobile conference, Max Cohen, vice president of the Oculus mobile division, said that the "Millions of users" have spent more than 20 million hours of entertainment on the Gear VR. He added that "this number is still surging."
However, he also admitted that there are limitations on this type of VR device and lack of location tracking features, including Gear VR and Google's latest release of Daydream View. Such mobile heads only allow users to turn their heads, but they cannot walk in virtual scenes, and more advanced devices usually need to be connected to a computer.
Cohen said: "Everybody thinks about holograms, but you can't get holograms from your cell phone... It can be very expensive. You need a high-end PC to drive it."
However, he believes that low-end VR devices belong to the “mass marketâ€, which means that these headlines are likely to be the main force attracting everyone to the VR platform.
Oculus is also working on a third category of VR headsets, an integrated device between the Gear VR and the Oculus Rift that can run VR content without high-end smartphones or high-end PCs.
At OC3 in October, Oculus demonstrated such a prototyping product. Inside and outside tracking allows users to move freely in the virtual world. Tracking from the inside out is the camera in the head can be positioned to track your every move.
Cohen pointed out that both devices will coexist (mobile VR head and PC heads). In other words, whether it is a "plug-in" or an all-in-one machine, both are the keys to getting hundreds of millions of people, or billions of people, to get their heads.
