Beer-F?rdertechnik is a well-known manufacturer of components for customised bulk goods technology. They have been looking for a way to use the integrated brake assembly to increase the safety of barrel discharge equipment used in the chemical industry. These devices are used for the discharge of toxic powders in tanks, with particles less than 100 μm, bulk weights of 0.86 kg/l, and ignition energy less than 20 mJ.

The following is the work of the air motor with integrated brake and planetary gears: The power of the air motor is used to move a bucket and start the tilting and discharging process. At the highest point, dead point, the motor is turned off, the brake is activated, and the current position is controlled. The integrated brake can be used as a brake and consists of three brake discs, a pressure spring and a piston. Use a single transmission line for separate control. If the pressure on the control line exceeds 3 bar, and the spring load is lower than the compression force, the pressure on the brake disc is cancelled and the motor starts to rotate. If the pressure on the control line is lower than 3 bar and the spring load is higher than the compression force, the brake discs will be forced together and prevent the motor from working.
In order to produce motors that can be used in potentially explosive atmospheres, DEPRAG German engineers have to jump out of their own mindset. If the air pressure on the brake control line exceeds 3 bar, friction will continue between the brake discs, causing excessive temperature rise. There is no doubt that this will increase the risk in the potentially explosive environment. Gerd Zinn, head of R&D at the plant, said: “Using safety valves, we minimize this risk.†When the pressure is below 5 bar, the valve automatically closes the supply and the pressure on the brakes becomes zero. Afterwards, the brakes will be pressed together completely to stop the motor from working.
Product manager Dagmar said happily: “Using this new drive system, we have successfully launched a remarkable and complete system in the market, and comply with ATEX Guide 94/9/EG and EX II 2GD c IIC T5. We will provide pneumatic motors for all technology markets and increase our lead."
Due to its internal structure, pneumatic motors are well suited for potentially explosive atmospheres. The principle is very simple: Use the pressure generated by the compressor to start the motor rotation. The air motor works as follows: The rotor located in the eccentric cylinder is set to rotate. The blades in the slots are squeezed to the wall of the cylinder by centrifugal force, thereby forming a working chamber with gas pressure expansion. Through the expansion of a certain amount of gas, the pressure energy is converted into kinetic energy, so that the motor starts to rotate. Another advantage is that the expanding gas can be cooled down and the air around the motor can also be cooled. Therefore, using a pneumatic motor in an environment with a potentially explosive risk can greatly reduce the risk of ignition of the gas at high temperatures.
Product manager Dagmar stated the other advantages of this new complete system: "Brake air motors require a compact planetary gear to determine the torque and the number of rotations required to meet the customer's needs." Customer's individual needs often lead to creative research and development , such as ATEX certified brake motors. The brakes developed for Beer-F?rdertechnik are suitable for frequencies of up to 600 braking operations per hour. The 1.2kW stainless steel motor from DEPRAG can have different torques.
