QorIQ communications processor Freescale
Freescale Semiconductor introduced the first processor based on its QorIQ communication platform and incorporating QUICC Engine multi-protocol technology. The QorIQ P1012 / P1021 product family provides customers with traditional multi-protocol interfaces with a high-performance, low-power path to the all-IP environment.
Most embedded multi-core processors integrate general-purpose CPUs. These CPUs are not optimized for the data plane, so more and faster CPUs are required to provide the same level of performance for multi-protocol processing. By integrating the latest QUICC Engine technology and one or two 800 MHz cores based on Power Architecture® technology, Freescale ’s latest QorIQ P1012 and P1021 processors provide efficient multi-core processing. The combination of QorIQ and QUICC Engine technology gives the device the ability to provide data and control plane processing, which eliminates the need to design separate field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) and application specific integrated circuits (ASICs).

The new products are pin compatible with existing QorIQ P1 and P2 products, and are software compatible with some Freescale PowerQUICC II Pro and PowerQUICC III processors (including MPC8323, MPC8358, MPC8360 and MPC8569 devices). This compatibility will preserve software investment value and provide a wide range of price and performance options for a wide range of wireless, wired, and industrial applications. In addition, the P1012 and P1021 processors can be used with Freescale's VorTIQa application software to quickly build performance-optimized SMB gateway products.
The latest processors support traditional interfaces and protocols for applications including multi-service routers, SMB gateways, and IP-PBX, such as T1 / E1, xDSL, ATM, HDLC, and 10/100/1000 Ethernet. The programmability of QUICC Engine technology also supports industrial interfaces and protocols to flexibly support additional applications with a shared platform. The new processor based on 45-nanometer processing technology includes large-capacity, high-performance L2 cache, and supports cost-effective and energy-efficient DDR3 memory, thereby allowing customers to further reduce the total system cost. These devices also incorporate SGMII, USB 2.0 and PCI Express® interconnect technologies.
Development support and supply In order to improve design efficiency, we provide development boards and third-party support tools for P1012 and P1021 devices. Both processors are expected to provide samples to selected customers in January 2010. Samples are planned to be widely available in 2010. Mass production is expected in December 2010.
