Apple sapphire new patent exposure iPhone 7 is expected to adopt

Although Apple's rumors of using sapphire glass in the iPhone 6 have not become a reality, Apple continues to explore this aspect. According to a document published today by the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), Apple applied for a patent entitled "Ceramic Protective Glass for Electronic Device Enclosures", which describes how to mount sapphire glass to the iPhone.

According to the patent, Apple is considering zirconia materials in addition to sapphire, both of which are crystals with suitable transparency, but Apple obviously prefers sapphire. The previous investment of 576 million US dollars can not be thrown away.

Apple's previous patents on sapphire mostly involved in the manufacture of materials, this time describing in detail how to integrate sapphire into mobile phones, which is a process problem. Since the use of glue and the like will increase the thickness, Apple plans to use a fixed way similar to sputum.

One of the ideas is to use a laser ablation technique to etch a wedge-shaped groove on a sapphire sheet with a thickness of 0.3-1.0 mm, while cooling the material with a jet, and taking away the melted ceramic by the way. Then Apple will borrow the shell design on the iPhone 6 and add corresponding embossing on the side to fit the groove on the sapphire glass to form a strong and seamless interlocking structure.

Apple also plans to add ceramic reinforcements to the outer casing, such as ceramic fibers. The document shows that Apple submitted the patent in May 2013 and has just passed the one-and-a-half-year confidentiality period. Maybe iPhone 7 can see it.
