Avago Technologies introduces small-size AF-assist flash LEDs

Avago Technologies, a leading provider of analog interface components for communications, industrial and consumer applications, has introduced two series of compact LEDs that reduce the space requirements for autofocus-assisted flash in digital camera designs. The new ASMT-FJ70 and ASMT-FG70 devices are the thinnest, smallest package LEDs on the market, providing the brightness needed for autofocus in dark settings.

ASMT-Fx70 LEDs are available in a tiny, environmentally friendly 3.6 (long) x 3.2 (wide) x 3.4 (high) mm surface mount package to help meet the market demand for thinner and lighter digital cameras. This LED uses a transparent, non-diffusing lens that produces high brightness through a narrow radiation pattern that provides consistent, consistent optical performance for precise autofocus. The ASMT-FJ70 device is orange, and the ASMT-FG70 device is the industry's first green-assist flash LED of this size.

The ASMT-FJ70 device uses aluminum indium gallium phosphide (AlInGaP) material technology with a 12 degree viewing angle, while the ASMT-FG70 device uses InGaN material technology and provides a 14 degree viewing angle. It is known that these two technologies are extremely luminous, enabling high light output over a wide range of drive currents, and narrow angles of view for long-range illumination and narrow-angle beam modes required for AF-assist flash.
