Hong Kong ASTRI and Wind River cooperate to support virtual small base stations and security gateways in NFV environments

[February 27, 2015, Hong Kong] The Hong Kong Institute of Applied Science and Technology (ASTRI) successfully implemented the virtual network function (VNF) of LTE small base station gateways and security gateways on Wind River® Titanium Server. The joint demonstration will be held during the 2015 World Mobile Communications Conference.

Through the Wind River® Titanium Cloud Ecosystem Partner Program, ASTRI can now offer their small base station gateway solution to virtualize network functions within the Wind River® Titanium Server. ASTRI worked closely with Wind River experts to pre-verify the performance and functionality of ASTRI's LTE Small Cell Gateway solution on the Titanium Server NFV Infrastructure Platform. Through the Wind River® Titanium Cloud Program, Wind River partners with partners to optimize and interoperate solutions, deploying NFV infrastructure for service providers and telecommunications equipment manufacturers, and accelerating time to market for new products.

ASTRI's LTE small base station gateway solution includes high-performance IPSec security gateways and small base station gateways. The IPSec security gateway, developed by ASTRI's high-performance Fastgate network protocol stack and Wind River® Titanium Server, provides over 20Gbps of IPSec throughput in a virtualized environment. VNF small cell solutions can be flexibly deployed to a single compute node or distributed to multiple compute nodes.

Dr. Zhuang Zheyi, Vice President of the Academy of Sciences and Director of the R&D Group, said: "With the Titanium Cloud Project, ASTRI's cloud-based 4G core network gateway can operate directly on carrier-grade platforms and enter the market faster." Continued: "Network virtualization is an important part of the next generation network. Our R&D results are verified by the NFV platform for its functions and performance. It is the first step taken by ASTRI on the road of network function virtualization research and development. , is also an important step."

Charlie Ashton, Senior Director of Business Development for Wind River Network Solutions, said: "We are very pleased to see ASNet's Virtual Networking Function (VNF) developed on the NFV infrastructure platform based on Wind River® Titanium Server. Titanium Server is an NFV The infrastructure provides key and powerful elements; plus the use of other previously validated NFV elements such as ASTRI's VNF, service providers can quickly and easily achieve their goals, such as reducing costs while introducing new High value service."

Wind River® Titanium Server is a carrier-grade NFV infrastructure software solution designed to meet the stringent needs of the telecommunications industry “on the go”. Titanium servers are the foundation of NFV software, and the telecommunications industry can take advantage of its rapid service deployment capabilities to meet the stringent requirements of telecommunications network operators for normal execution times and high reliability. Titanium servers use open standards, including telecommunications-grade Wind River® Linux, real-time kernel-based virtual machines, carrier-grade enhanced OpenStack®, Intel® Data Plane Development Kit, and Intel® Architecture Optimized Acceleration vSwitch technology.

The World Mobile Communications Conference will be held at the Fira Gran Via Exhibition Center in Barcelona, Spain from March 2nd to 5th. The system demonstration of ASTRI and Wind River will be located in Hall 3, booth 3A10. The World Mobile Communications Congress is the world's largest annual event for the mobile communications industry. Exhibitions and conferences bring together cutting-edge technology in the mobile industry and numerous industry decision makers. The show attracted the attention of the industry and attracted 70,000-80,000 people each year.

ASTRI has been developing LTE since 2008 and has become a leader in LTE and LTE-Advanced small base stations, terminals and gateway technologies. ASTRI has developed the industry's first commercial-grade, small base station and terminal baseband core reference design that supports both TD-LTE and LTE FDD. ASTRI's LTE technology has been adopted in a number of partner chips and system solutions for the public and private networking markets. ASTRI's core network technology has also been successfully transferred to a number of companies.

Introduction to ASTRI

The Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) was established in 2000 by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government. Its mission is to enhance the competitiveness of Hong Kong through the application of technology research to help develop technology-based industries. In 2006, ASTRI was commissioned by the SAR Government to host the Hong Kong Information and Communication Technology R&D Center. In 2012, ASTRI was approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology to establish Hong Kong's first "National ASIC System Engineering Technology Research Center Hong Kong Branch". Since its inception, ASTRI has registered a number of intellectual property rights, which has trained a number of outstanding researchers for the industry and created economic benefits for Hong Kong, Mainland China and the region through the transfer of new technology.
