Global AMOLED TV will reach 100,000 units in 2012

NPD DisplaySearch released the latest OLED technology and market trend report pointed out that in 2011 OLED (organic light-emitting diode display) technology rapid progress in 2012 will be active organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) mass production technology mature and applied to the beginning of large-size panel . NPD DisplaySearch expects OLED technology will continue to thrive in the next 10 years. Although the current mass production of OLED glass substrates is 5.5 generation lines, and the mass production cost structure above the 5.5th generation line is not yet clear, but with AMOLED technology gradually mature and stable, AMOLED panels will be gradually applied to large-size products. It is estimated that more than 10 million AMOLED tablet panels will be shipped worldwide in 2012, and AMOLED TV shipments will reach more than 100,000 units.

In recent years, many manufacturers are keen to develop AMOLED display technology, which is represented by the Samsung Mobile Display (SMD) 5.5 generation production line, while SMD and LG Display have also announced their 8th-generation line AMOLED investment plans. Other panel makers are new or have retired and re-entered, such as AUO, CMI, IRICO, Tianma and BOE. Gradually developed and gradually made some progress.

According to analysis by NPD DisplaySearch, the output value of OLED panels in 2011 is expected to reach 4 billion US dollars, which is about 4% of the output value of all flat panel displays; in 2018, it will create output value of more than 20 billion US dollars, reaching 16% of the output value of all flat panel displays. NPD DisplaySearch predicts that AMOLED TV will reach a scale of more than 10 million units in 2017. Although there will be problems such as insufficient scale economy, insufficient mass production stability, and high cost in the initial stage of mass production of AMOLED TV panels, under the motive of TV brand manufacturers seeking product differentiation, it is expected that there will be strategic AMOLED TV pricing methods. Stimulate the purchasing motivation of end-market consumers.

Jennifer Colegrove, NPD DisplaySearch's new display technology division, said: "OLED display technology has made great progress, but it still poses a big challenge for large-size panel manufacturing costs. Currently, OLED has been mass-produced and applied in small and medium-sized areas. On smartphones, once volume production of OLED line 8 begins within two years, AMOLED is expected to compete with TFT-LCD in large-size applications such as flat-panel TVs, notebooks, etc. We expect that more tablet PCs will adopt AMOLED panel in 2012. ."
