Power Integrations, Inc. (Nasdaq: POWI), a leader in high-voltage integrated circuits for energy-efficient power conversion, announces the introduction of a new line of energy-efficient, off-line switching ICs, LinkSwitch TM-HP, for this family of devices. Output power up to 90 W and accurate primary side regulation (PSR).
The LinkSwitch-HP IC uses innovative control algorithms and utilizes the characteristics of the main power transformer and output diodes (instead of optocouplers and associated feedback circuits) to determine the amount of power transferred from the primary side to the isolated secondary side. This approach greatly reduces component count, saving space and cost while enhancing reliability. With the introduction of Power Integrations' LinkSwitch product line more than a decade ago, PSR has become popular, and is now standard in many low-power applications such as mobile phone chargers, but until now it lacked high-power products. The required constant pressure accuracy. LinkSwitch-HP devices feature a unique multi-mode control architecture that fundamentally enhances the PSR's technology level, making it a viable solution for power applications ranging from 9 W to 90 W.
Doug Bailey, vice president of marketing at Power Integrations, said: "Power Integrations is the first company to introduce integrated primary-side off-line switching devices. From mobile device chargers to LED lighting, to electrical bias supplies, and even smart meters. In a wide range of low-power applications, LinkSwitch products are currently more popular than any other product that uses PSR technology. LinkSwitch-HP devices extend the PSR's power range to 90 W, enabling designers to apply the benefits of PSR to tablet charging. Applications such as ultra-pole adapters, LCD monitors and TVs, set-top boxes, home appliances, and embedded power supplies. The power and performance offered by LinkSwitch-HP ICs are unmatched by any other PSR solution."
LinkSwitch-HP devices automatically select control modes based on dominant line voltage and load conditions to optimize conversion efficiency and respond to transient load requirements while reducing output ripple and audible noise. Continuous conduction mode (CCM) operation reduces RMS current, which in turn increases efficiency and reduces heat dissipation, while the 132 kHz full-load operating frequency allows for smaller core and LC post filter components. LinkSwitch-HP ICs achieve no-load power consumption of less than 30 mW at 230 VAC and more than 50% efficiency at 0.1 W input power, making it easy to meet all global energy efficiency regulations such as ErP (EuP), ENERGY STAR? EPS V2.0 and EC Eco Design Directive external power supply Tier 2 requirements.
LinkSwitch-HP devices can also reduce cost and complexity in meeting Chinese safety standards GB 4943.1-2011, which stipulates that warning labels must be placed on power supplies that do not meet stringent creepage and clearance requirements. This new regulation is similar to UL 60950-2007 and will be enforced on December 1, 2012. It requires that for equipment used above 2000 meters above sea level, the primary side-secondary clearance of the power supply must be increased (multiply To multiply the factor by 1.48), otherwise a warning label must be placed on the product.
The LinkSwitch-HP IC offers comprehensive protection features including optional current limit, programmable turn-off delay time extension, and voltage ramp, voltage dip, overvoltage, overcurrent, and overtemperature protection. Engineering samples are available now, and mass production is expected to begin at the end of August 2012.
LinkSwitch-HP devices are available in two different package options: eSIP-7C and eDIP-12B, priced at $0.42 each (LNK6763V) based on 10,000-piece quantities. We now offer two support evaluation demo boards at the customer's request: RDK-321 (17 W dual output flyback converter for LCD displays) and RDK-313 (30 W, 12 V single output) Universal adapter).
